The Naughty List (Boob Review)

First things first: I did not mean to type “Boob Review” in the title, and I would have edited it to say “Book Review” had this been any other book.

However, the phrase “perfect tits” comes up enough in The Naughty List to warrant the inclusion of my typo (or Freudian slip, take your pick).

Ahem (or should I say, “Awoo”?)…

There’s something primally gripping about the manner in which J.R. Froemling writes.

The Naughty List’s dialogue jumps off the page, squirms around in your gut, summoning you to absorb the tension and revel in the chemistry of these characters. Just about every conversation in the story is packed with pure semtex; The main characters are fearless, self-actualized, inspirationally snarky, and so horny that it’s just exhausting.

The sex scene placement and pacing remind me of the 1990s Mortal Kombat film, but it’s a sex tournament instead of a fighting tournament.

Johnny Cage, wandering around the woods, encounters Scorpion. Then they fuck.

Lui Kang, his journey interrupted by Reptile coming to life. Then they fuck.

Sometimes when you realize screwing is about to go down in The Naughty List, you can just imagine a voice popping in and chanting, “Test your might” along to some adrenaline-pumping electronica.

Or maybe that’s just me.

The fighting tournament comparison is funny, though, because The Naughty List has fight scenes too. Rather hard-hitting ones, at that, sometimes with humorous components, and always full to the brim with entertaining splendor.

Once in a while I had difficulty following some of the characters’ thought processes, or the logical progression of some of the scenarios and conversations, but Froemling writes with such confidence and solidity that it was easy to bestow the benefit of the doubt, concluding that the writer is simply wittier and more cultured than I’ll ever be.

This is not a story that relies on its sex scenes to be interesting; in fact, it would be a fully functional and engaging book even in the PG-13 range. However, that’s not to say the sex shouldn’t be there. It’s just to say there’s more to it than that!

The twists and turns of the tale are well-executed, and the resolution is satisfactory and appropriate. I cared about the fate of these characters and enjoyed the whole shebang rather thoroughly.

Awoo!
