Poem: Antitoxin for Sleepless Nights

Sweet self-absorbed child
Oblivious to the world
outside his mind
Caught a glimpse tonight
of the gravity
of his self-serving tides
Possessed by restless fear
to become someone
to do something worthwhile
Faith without evidence
that his fate is not bound
to street corners, holding signs
He remembers that look in her eyes
Celestial validation, day and night
Back when the right words made
everything just seem all right
Back when we vaporized the clouds
and ruled the sky
Now he writes these words
to discern the antitoxin for sleepless nights
Regardless of what you’ve heard
If ya don’t know the heart, ya can’t abide the plight
He strives to learn and apply
despite the minefield of his mind
Spread thin across this molding bread
Conflicting voices in this burning head
Is it too much
to ask for love?
Is it too much
to seek the new?
Will the roots feel left behind
when the tree reaches for the sky?

If he could weep out every final tear
for every shattered dream, trauma and baseless fear
the empty space inside would stretch forever
touching everything that ever mattered
Poetry, delightfully vague
Makes you wonder if he’s OK
He’s smiling in this acid rain
Of course he’s gonna be OK
